Obituaries & Condolences

Mark I. Spooner
66 yrs. old of the Town of Pitsfiled, NY

An awesome man, Mark I. Spooner stepped into Heaven on Saturday, November 30, 2013 to be with his Lord.  Mark was born on July 4, 1947 in the town of Edmeston, NY, the son of Henry I. and Elsie M. (Williams) Spooner.  He was married to Patricia Parker on November 24, 1993.  He spent his childhood in the West Edmeston / Leonardsville area and graduated from Leonardsville Centeral School in 1965.  During his lifetime he was a farmer, having his own farm.  He also worked as a heavy equipment operator for Richard Hanna in the Utica area, working on the polar bear exhibit at the Utica Zoo, among other projects.  He was also a logger, and as a sideline, built a number of log homes.  He attended Pine Crest Bible School and proceeded to become an ordained minister.  Mark became involved with two rehabilitation centers in Virginia, the Otsego County Jail Ministry, and went on mission trips to Haiti for sixteen years.
During his life he tried to be a friend to all.
This was especially exhibited during his hospitalization when he was visited by Pentecostals, Baptists, Mennonites, Amish and Quakers who all wanted to pray with him.

Besides his wife, he is survived by four sisters; Janet (Robert) Anderson, Rita (Earl) Goodrich, Christine (Donald) Taylor, and Lori (Jeff) Guido; two daughters; Paula (Robert) Welsh, Michelle (Jamie) Denkenberger, one son; Capt. David (Candy) Spooner, a stepdaughter, Rebecca (Michael) Wheeler, eleven grandchildren whom he loved, and a number of nieces and nephews.

Calling hours will be from 3:00 – 5:00 PM with the funeral at 6:00 PM immediately followed by a celebration of his life on Wednesday, December 4, 2013 at the South Edmeston Community Center.  In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Catskill Area Hospice or Mark’s Haiti mission work c/o the South Edmeston Community Church.

Took a drive in Hamilton the other day, drove by the house we all lived in...decided when i got home to do a search and was brought to a stop when i found out Mark had passed away. No words can express how sad this is. . I was able to, lucky enough and honored to have been able to call Mark my Step Father...maybe only for a few years, but what he gave me will last a life time. If Paula, Michele or David find this message by all means please contact me, would love to hear from you. So sorry for your loss...was a great man and an amazing person... Jim

Dear Aunt Pat, Paula, Michelle, and David, So sorry to hear of your grief and so thankful for Uncle Mark's joy at getting to go Home. Please know that we're thinking of you!!!!! One of the things that I loved about Uncle Mark was that he was always one to find time to visit even if it meant going out of his way. I loved the times he managed to 'find me' when on his travels. One time he brought Paula and Michelle to the camp where I was working in South Gibson, PA. It was fun showing them around. So sweet to have family! Another that was really special was when he 'happened' to be going through when I was teaching in Lexington, North Carolina. I had made some bread and pies for him but the electricity went out in the snow storm that hit just a couple of hours before he arrived. I was thankful that I could bake down the street where they still had power. The neighbors were really thankful that my logging Uncle just happened' to have a chain saw in the back of his car to get the road opened up. I think Uncle Mark was more entertained by the panic of the North Carolinians over a bit of snow than by my cooking, but it was so fun to have him come at such an opportune moment. For the rest of the time that I was living there the neighbors always talked about how helpful a man he was.... A complete stranger getting them out of snow drifts and opening up the roads. I'm very thankful to have had such an Uncle.
