Obituaries & Condolences

Robert Alva Nober, 80, passed away due to complications from pneumonia on Wednesday, May 2, 2018 at the Chenango Memorial Hospital, Norwich, NY.  He was born on December 9, 1937 in Cochecton Center, NY, the son of the late Charles and Myrtle (Wood) Nober.

He grew up in Lava, NY and attended the Skipperine Elementary School and Narrowsburg, NY High School.  On September 9, 1955 in Lake Huntington, NY he married his high school sweetheart, Elaine H. Meckle who predeceased him on November 30, 2008.

Bob spent his life doing many things; from forest ranger to carpentry, truck driving, farming, construction, logging, automobile repair to heavy equipment operator.  His Mother would say he was a jack-of-all-trades.  He worked for many years as general manager at Kerry, Inc., Portable Trout Streams, Old Forge, NY and traveled all over the country to events.  He also worked at Plan-a-Home in Sidney, NY overseeing installation of mobile homes.

Bob was an outgoing, well-liked person who would strike up a conversation with anyone and was always interested in what others had to say.  He will be remembered for his witty responses and natural sense of humor.  His passions were hunting, fishing (he enjoyed many trips to Canada and catching the big walleyes), camping, NASCAR (fan of Bill Elliot and Jeff Gordon), driving the back country roads, watching reruns of westerns and country music (the old music…the good stuff he would say) and tinkering in his garage with his boys and best friend, Paul Harrington.  Most of all he enjoyed spending time with his grandchildren and great grandchildren.  He will be dearly missed.

He is survived by daughters, Deborah Sumner, Rochester, NY and Elaura (Dave) Nober, Norwich, NY, sons, Robert (Penny) Nober, Kevin (Tami) Nober and John (Barbara) Nober all of Guilford, NY as well as daughter-in-law, Holly Nober, Beach Lake, PA.  Also, surviving are brothers, Allan (Eleanor) Nober of Lake Huntington, NY and Raymond Nober of Flint, MI., brother-in-law, Darrell (Ellie) Meckle, Purcelville, VA and sister-in-law, Ilene Meckle, Tyler Hill, PA.   Also, a special niece and nephew survive; Allan (Kelly) Nober and Kim Nober of Cochecton, NY.

Also surviving are Grandchildren; Jill Sumner, Stephanie (Randy) Sumner, Rochester, NY, Charles (Lindsay) Nober, Honesdale, PA, April (Nick) Henshaw, Paradise, PA, Ashley (Kevin) ZuHone, Beach Lake, PA, Robert (Kelly) Nober, Unadilla, NY, Chelsea (Brock) Nober, Mt. Upton, NY, Samantha (Bobby), Brianna, Jenny, Jonathan (Victoria) and Raymond Nober of Guilford, NY.

Twenty-five Great-Grandchildren also survive; Alaina, Emily, Kayla and Shelby Sumner, Baleigh, Peyton, Mylee and Addison Henshaw, Makaylee, Nathaniel and Raelynn Nober, Charlee and Carson ZuHone, Troy Cox, Ashlynne Howland, Lincoln Hoag, Shane, Stephanie, Shaylynn, Jenna, Stephani, Rebecca, Bailee, Makenna and Emma Nober.

Two sons, Shane Lynn Nober on September 26, 1992 and Charles Frederick Nober on March 3, 2007, a son-in-law, William Sumner on November 30, 2011 and sister-in-law, Jan Nober on August 6, 2014, predeceased him.

Arrangements are entrusted to the Dakin Funeral Home, New Berlin, NY.  Friends and family may call from 11:00 AM to the time of the service at 1:00 PM on Wednesday, May 9, 2018.  Interment will follow at the North Guilford Cemetery.

Please consider memorial contributions to the Chenango County SPCA, 6160 County Road 32, Norwich, NY  13815.
