Obituaries & Condolences

John Sherwood left us on October 5, 2020.

John was born on November 6, 1943 in Afton, NY the son of Clarence and Bernice Sherwood. His childhood was spent in Edmeston, NY.  He was a graduate of Edmeston Central School and Schenectady School of Barber.  He operated the Sportsmen Barbershop which originally started in the Eagle Inn establishment.

On September 26, 1982 John married Eva Sherwood in New Berlin, NY.

In addition to Eva, John is survived by his children; Timothy and spouse Amy Sherwood, Cortland, NY; Pamela and spouse Robert Rowe, New Berlin, NY; Renee and spouse Paul Casey, Oneonta, NY; Tammy Carpenter with Mike Johnson, New Berlin, NY; Michele and spouse Matthew Lindow, West Sand Lake, NY,  Grand Children- Heather Sherwood, Megan Carpenter, Holly Carpenter, Emilie Sherwood, Caleb Casey, Liam Casey, Elizabeth Lindow and Chelsea Lindow, and sister-in-law Eda Scheurmann of West Germany.

He was predeceased by his grandson Joshua Sherwood and brother, Bill Sherwood, who passed away recently in August 2020.  The two of them had a special bond and would end the evening dancing the final dance at celebrations they attended

John meant a lot to many people he was best known as Dad, Grandpa/Opa, Johnny and "Clip".  He was a die-hard sports fan, golfer and a man of humor.  Children were his passion.  He coached baseball, ref'd basketball, linesman for New Berlin football and participated in many other sports activities with kids. John was very involved with the New Berlin Community and was nominated Citizen of the Year for his efforts.  For many years he started the infamous Youth Days Parade.  While married, John and Eva visited many countries, tropical islands and the United States.  His favorite place was his winter home in Sebatian, Florida where it was always sunny.  Renowned by many as the New Berlin town barber for 40 years, where many "board meetings took place". His barber career started in Manhattan, moved to Oneonta, then to New Berlin.  John was an avid reader and could be found on his side porch reading after retirement.  He loved his family immensely and enjoyed the company of friends.

A private gathering in John’s memory will be held at the convenience of the family.

Memorial donations may be made to the American Legion, Sherburne, NY.

Thoughts and prayers to John's family as he completes his journey. He truly was an exciting man to know and be around. Tim, Pam, Renee, what stories, laughs, and memories we all can recall growing up. From that slapping razor sound of the leather strap while sitting in the chair to those young "gatherings" in the attics of our youth as we started to grow up. Your father was a critical part of many lives and is remembered very fondly.

Condolences to John’s entire family, particularly his wife and children regarding his recent passing. I knew John we’ll over the course of over 50 years through basketball officiating and while I was working at NBCS. While there, if I wanted to know what was going on behind the scenes in the community or at school, I would visit to his barbershop. He was a ardent supporter of the “purple and gold” and his the New Berlin community. Together with his brother, they were a great asset to that area. I am saddened by his death but know he loved his family in total. He was simply one of the good guys!

Although it's been a few years since our last visit (30 years). John was always a gentlemen. The sad part for me is too many of my friends from my time in New Berlin are departing which makes me feel older by the day.
Godd bye my friend enjoy your time in paradise.
