Hilda E. Christian (March 1 1935 - February 12 2024)
Hilda E. Christian, 88, passed away peacefully at her home in New Berlin surrounded by her family.
She was born March 1, 1935, in Middlefield, N.Y. to Louis M. Backus Sr and Fairy B. (Brownell) Backus. She was predeceased by her brothers Louis Backus Jr., Howard Backus and her sisters Bertha Wagner and Bernice Salisbury. She graduated from New Berlin Central School enjoying many class reunions.
Hilda married Robert R. Christian at St. Malachy’s church in Sherburne N.Y. in 1957. Their union was blessed with five children, Kim Jordan, Steve Christian. Jeff Christian. Kathy Smith, and Joe Christian, and blessed again with 14 grandchildren and 13 great-grandchildren (14th on the way). She felt very grateful to have spent many happy memories with her grand and great grandchildren.
For many joyous years, she cherished bringing up her children spending time in their various extracurricular activities and family vacations. She enjoyed decorating her home, she was the best wallpaper decorator ever! She was involved in community activities such as the American Legion Auxiliary, a member since 1970 and serving as President for 12 years. She loved country line dancing, crocheting, and visiting family and friends. She also enjoyed her work at I.L. Richer Co., Agway, Mirabito, and finished her working career at Chase Memorial Nursing.
In faith, she read daily affirmations of prayer. The prayer read on February 12th: Father, this day I offer my family anew to you in prayer. Guide each of them in paths that lead to salvation, peace, and Christian service.
In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Hospice at www.hospicechenango.org.
Calling hours will be held from 2 to 4 PM Saturday, February 17, 2024 at the Dakin Funeral Home LP, 17 N. Main Street New Berlin NY with services immediately following. A celebration following the funeral service will be held at The Pittsfield firehouse. |

Cushman Street has lost one of its fine matriarchs. Between the Parry's boys, the Sutton's boys, and Hilda's boys, there was always a lot of action on the street and Hilda was always someone who helped oversee all of that action. I will miss seeing and chatting with her when I visit. My condolences to everyone in her family.

Sincere condolences. She was a very sweet lady, always a pleasure waiting on her at Hoyt's Hardware. Later years she helped me get my mom set up at Chase Apartments. Hold close all your wonderful memories.

Good day, my name is Bob Smith, I was manager of Victory Markets in New Berlin. I remember Hilda Christian as a customer at the store. What a beautiful lady, I recall her being a very pleasant person to deal with any time we met during her grocery shopping experience while purchasing for her family. It saddens me to hear of her passing.
Please know you are in my thoughts and prayers at this time.
