New Berlin

Bruce F. Simmons Sr., a dedicated husband, father, grandfather, and a cherished figure in his community, passed away unexpectedly on September 23, 2024, in Syracuse, NY, at the age of 78. Born on July 17, 1946, in North Brookfield, NY, Bruce exemplified the values of hard work and family devotion throughout his life.

Bruce's career began on the farm, where he understood the essence of hard work and commitment to land and family. He subsequently worked for Webb and Son's before dedicating many years to the Pittsfield Department of Public Works (DPW). Even upon retirement, Bruce's spirit of service did not wane as he took on a position at NAPA Auto Parts in New Berlin, NY, where his hands-on expertise and troubleshooting skills shined. “Grease is cheaper than parts,” he often stated, which reflected his thrifty nature and practical approach to life.

Education was important to Bruce; he attended Leonardsville School and later earned his GED, proving his commitment to self-improvement and lifelong learning. His personality was a combination of hard-working dedication, stubbornness, and immense love for his family. Bruce was there for his loved ones, embodying the idea that family needs come first. He had a knack for thriftiness, ensuring that nothing went to waste, which is a trait admired and remembered by many.

Bruce's interests were as diverse as his skills. He found joy in woodworking, bringing to life various projects that delighted his family. He had a passion for John Deere tractors, often fixing and maintaining them—a testament to his skill set and love for machinery. His time spent in sheds, crafting his creations and indulging in simple pleasures, brought him immense happiness. Bruce was famously known for his love of “Circus Peanuts” and for making the best peanut butter fudge, sweet treats that will be missed dearly by his family.

He leaves behind a legacy that extends far beyond his lifetime. Bruce wanted to be remembered as someone who made a difference, and those who knew him can attest to the great legacy he indeed left behind. He is survived by his loving wife, Judy Simmons; children, Toni Sohns Luther, Bruce Simmons Jr. Theresa, Scott Simmons Leslie, Amanda Kelsey, and Lucas Kelsey; grandchildren, Christopher Donaldson Cindy, Amber Yager Ryan, Ashley Sweet Mark, Corey Simmons Samantha, Scott Simmons Jr. Jenise, Brandy Scott, Courtney Simmons, Michaela Vibbard Logan, Randy Simmons, Megan Simmons, Jaden Simmons, Carter Simmons, as well as a host of great-grandchildren, including Christopher Bruce Donaldson, Aidan Yager, Ryan Yager, Parker Flanagan, Paislee Flanagan, Jayce Pickwick, Caleb Sweet, Kane Vibbard, Kash Vibbard, Rhett Simmons, Amelia Simmons, and Jack Simmons, with another great-granddaughter on the way in November. Bruce is also survived by his beloved siblings, Richard Simmons Mary, John Simmons Janet, Gary Simmons Betty, David Simmons Tina, Roy Simmons, Neil Simmons Marie, Sharon Mayton Dan, Marylou Dye, Jean Cornell Bill, and Lynette Wilcox; and many cherished nieces, nephews, and great-nieces and nephews, all of whom will carry his memory forward.

Bruce was preceded in death by his parents, Renrick and Doris Simmons, and brothers Robert, Duane, and James Simmons, along with sister Gail Harrington. As family gathers to honor his remarkable life, the memories of Bruce's unfailing love, strength, and laughter will remain etched in the hearts of all who knew him.
