Lois Fairchild of Columbus, 91, passed away on February 3, 2025, surrounded by her loving family, following a short illness. Lois was born at home in Augusta, July 6, 1933, to Clayton and Martha (Kitchen) Peters.
She graduated from Madison Central School in 1951 and stayed at the Y while attending the Utica School of Commerce in Utica for secretarial/bookkeeping. She worked for Preferred Mutual Insurance Company as a Rate Clerk for many years.
On May 21, 1955, she married Philip Fairchild. Lois and Phil traveled extensively and enjoyed camping with the Leatherstocking J’s Jayco Club for 30 years. They also enjoyed their weekly trips to go out to lunch and play cards with Lois’ family. They were well known in the area as the ‘Silver Heads’.
Everyone that knew her knows how much she loved Sudoku puzzles, bookkeeping, knitting, and gardening. Lois was the secretary/treasurer of the Bullthistle Model Railroad Society in Norwich for many years.
Lois is survived by her husband of almost 70 years, Philip Fairchild, their children James (Christine) Fairchild of Fort Worth, Texas, Shirley (William) Fearn of Alpine, NY, and Daniel Fairchild of South New Berlin, her grandchildren, Tara (Ian) Croft, Corey Fairchild, Nathan Fairchild, Drew Fairchild, and Amber Fairchild, as well as 3 great-grandchildren. She is also survived by her brothers and sister, William Peters, Laura Fuess, and Thomas Peters, as well as several cousins, in-laws, nieces and nephews.
She was predeceased by her sisters, Dorothy Waterman and Mary Jane Turner, and her great-grandson Casper Carter.
A celebration of life will be held at the Whitney House, 4311 Rte 80, Sherburne, NY 13460 on Saturday, February 22, from 1-4 pm. For those who have a fond memory of Lois that they would like to leave for the family, a memory box will be available.
