Robert F. Bard, a distinguished professor of Bio Chemistry at the University of Puerto Rico for many years, passed away on September 14, 2024 in Albany, NY. Born on July 11, 1942, in Solon, OH, Robert was a dedicated educator and a passionate researcher whose work left a lasting impact on the field of biochemistry.
He held a PhD in Bio Chemistry from the University of Miami and proudly served in the Air Force as a surgical assistant, where he made significant contributions to medical advancements, particularly regarding reproductive organs during surgery. Notably, Robert designed a biogenetic strand of seaweed and successfully utilized it to establish a more vibrant ecosystem along the coast of Puerto Rico. His intellectual rigor and unwavering dedication marked him as a leading figure in his field.
Beyond his academic achievements, Robert was known for his tough and disciplined personality. He engaged in witty conversations and could convey profound thoughts with few but significant words. A Cleveland Browns fan at heart, he enjoyed football and was known for his love of black coffee, served without cream or sugar. His hobbies included playing trombone, mastering solitaire, and engaging in his biggest passion—working on cars. He cherished the celebration of the solstice and found joy in making berry rum from the fruits he and his wife picked from their yard. Food was an important part of his life; he was particularly fond of red meat and always made sure to have Tabasco hot sauce on hand.
Robert is survived by his son, Alex Bard, and his daughter, Jenny Bard. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife, Sara Bard; his mother, Marcella Bard; and his father, Theodore Bard.
